Canada as Part of the Americas

“God Bless America!”

Declared Puerto Rican superstar Bad Bunny at the Super Bowel LX.

He followed up by listing all of the countries of the Americas, with a banner above stating “the only thing more powerful than hate is love,” holding a football with the message “together, we are America.”

His performance was a positive display of Latin American and Caribbean culture, depicting the balance of working hard and enjoying life.

This came in the face of MAGA’s attacks on people of Latin American origin, both within the Untied States and across the American hemisphere, such as the abduction of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and the ongoing raids by Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) against Latino communities, all of which has escalated in the second Trump Administration.

His defiant declaration of the countries of the Americas was an affirmation that we are all the people of the Americas, that we are Americans, in the continental sense, regardless if we have American citizenship (which should not be the metric used to determine someone’s humanity).

Another positive of his performance was the inclusion of Canada in the list of the countries of the Americas…. because we are in fact in the Americas!

This apparent truth is something often deemphasized in our own domestic politics due to the status of being a constitutional monarchy and a legacy state of the British Empire. This has influenced the consciousness of our country to give a distorted perspective of our place in the world, instilling an oceanic outlook, as opposed to a continental outlook towards the Americas.

There is a tendency for many of our politicians to focus on economic and military alliances with the United Kingdom and European Union, such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), even when dealing with a more expansionist United States of America under Trump, as opposed to seeking out solid Pan-American and anti-imperialist alliances with our more immediate neighbours in Central and South America.

Canada’s place within the Americas is something we strive to reemphasize as Canadian Republicans. This is important for building the critical continental alliances with other states resisting the American Empire in our hemisphere.

“Together, we are America.”
